Here we analyzed the saliva from 5 subjects with major depression (MDD) before and after ketamine treatment (24 hours post-intravenous infusion) and 5 controls using in-solution digestion and nanoliquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (nano-LC-MS/MS). In this experiment, we found declines in the inflammatory protein lactotransferrin after ketamine treatment, supporting that this medication may act as an anti-inflammatory in people with depression. We also found elevated lactotransferrin in the saliva of MDD subjects compared to controls, supporting the hypothesis that depression in some cases is a disorder characterized by increased inflammation.
