On-line Breath Metabolomic Analysis using Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionisation on a Compact Mass Spectrometer

The breath mask could be easily connected to the compact mass spectrometer using an adduction pump assembly, sampling was straightforward. Compounds originating from the peppermint oil were detected in the breath of all 20 participants tested and were detected up to 6 hours post dosing, washout of the peppermint oil was achieved after ～10 hours. The technique has high sensitivity of detection, and is able to detect low pptv concentrations of analyte. The compact mass spectrometer has the potential to be used as a mobile device on a trolley for in-clinic measurements.
