The order of internal energy transfer to BP desorbed by SALDI from the various carbon substrates was found to be opposite to their desorption efficiencies. This phenomenon was difficult to be rationalized by the "thermal desorption" model. Hence, we suggested that a "non-thermal" process may be involved in the SALDI desorption mechanism(s). From the high mean initial velocity of BP desorbed from carbon-based SALDI-MS, a phase transition process was proposed to be involved in the desorption process of carbon-based SALDI. A better understanding of the desorption/ionziation process is anticipated to foster the selection/fabrication of new materials as promising SALDI-MS substrates.
