The presented investigation demonstrated that the use of derivatization approaches for the investigation of polymers, containing functional groups with active hydrogen atoms, by MALDI mass spectrometry allows the valuable information about the structure of individual oligomers to be obtained. In addition, the enhancement of sensitivity and oligomer resolution may be gained. A number of free functional groups and structures of low-molecular weight oligomers can aid in elucidation of polymerization mechanisms, in controlling and optimization of reaction conditions. The work is in progress on using flophemesyl derivatives for the investigation by negative ion MALDI-ToF mass spectrometry.
