There have been long-standing controversies surrounding the ionic reactions of peroxides in solution and in vivo, e.g., the Kornblum-De La Mare mechanism for base-mediated E_(CO)2 decomposition of alkyl peroxides [1] (Scheme 1), the Haber-Weiss reaction of HOOH [2,3], and more recently, the controversial reaction of vitamin C with lipid peroxides forming genotoxins [4,5].
