Punctuation is a system of visible signs to clarify sentence structure and a way to communicate meaning. Guidelines for teaching punctuation include clarifying its function, recognizing differences in practice, teaching punctuation late in a writing course or workshop, advocating less punctuation, asking writers about their instruction in punctuation and their punctuation usage, limiting the number of punctuation guidelines presented, and using exercises such as the one presented here to help writers master punctuation guidelines. This presentation will help teachers, writers, and editors explain American punctuation as well as punctuate correctly.
