Thermal and Spectroscopic Characterization of Tartaric Acid and Derivatives

Tartaric acid is a natural biomaterial readily available as a by-product of the wine industry. It is tetrafunctional containing two hydroxyl and two carboxyl groups. This functionality provides ready access to a variety of ester or ether derivatives which may have a number of industrial applications. Several of these derivatives may serve as green flame retardants for polymeric materials. Multifunctional compounds produced from tartaric acid have been characterized using thermal and spectroscopic methods.
