Spectroscopic Estimation of Uric Acid and Its Derivatives

Salts of uric acid with cobalt(II) and nickel(II) were prepared. Uric acid was used in the form of lithium urate. Cobalt(II) and nickel(II) were taken as their acetates. Maximum amount of uric acid dissolved in lithium carbonate was 0.1 gm. When lithium urate was mixed with transition metal salt solution, precipitate appeared immediately. Analyses of filtrate and precipitate were done to establish the compositions of uric acid salts. In case of cobalt acetate showed a new peak in the UV-region of spectra of filtrate on increasing volume of cobalt acetate. That was not present in UV-VIS spectra of cobalt acetate or uric acid. Peak height of this peak increased on lowering of pH; the peak diminished and at last disappeared in the filtrate obtained from lithium urate and cobalt acetate. The amount of uric acid changed between 0.01-0.1 gm. In all concentrations, the filtrate was free from uric acid.
