Tunnelling in Contaminated Ground

As part of the $6.3B East Side Access Project (ESA), four bored tunnels and two cut and cover sections will be constructed through contaminated groundwater. The tunnels will be constructed under an active railroad yard and the main line of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR). This paper addresses the technical challenges related to control of contaminated ground water during tunnelling including construction and monitoring approaches identified to control movement of contaminated ground water.
