Tunnelling in Contaminated Ground

As part of the $6.3B East Side Access Project (ESA), four bored tunnels and two cut and coverrnsections will be constructed through contaminated groundwater. The tunnels will be constructed underrnan active railroad yard and the main line of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR). This paper addressesrnthe technical challenges related to control of contaminated ground water during tunnelling includingrnconstruction and monitoring approaches identified to control movement of contaminated groundrnwater.
