Brachytherapy, a form of radiation cancer therapy, is carried out by implanting radioactive seeds in close proximity to the affected tissue. Oral cancer can be treated by permanent implant brachytherapy with ~(198)Au seeds. This type of brachytherapy employs short half-life radioactive gold seeds, which emit radiation for a period of several weeks and are subsequently left in place. The procedure involves injection of the sources by hand, exposing the performing physicians to radiation. This exposure can be partially or completely mitigated by employing a robotic system to assist the surgeons as shown in Fig.1.
