MRLs, A Practical Alternative to MRs?

The proliferation of Machine Room-less Elevators (MRLs), at the turn of the century, was one of the most crucial paradigm shifts to impact the elevator industry. Initially, MRLs were introduced as a green alternative to hydraulic elevators and were offered as a solution where height restrictions made machine room on top arrangements impossible. They provided a solution that was confined to low-rise buildings. However, over the last five years, the MRL elevator is increasingly being pitched as a total alternative to the Machine Room Elevator (MR) with many suppliers refusing to provide a MR alternative even for high-rise buildings or even where a machine room exists. This paper critically examines the practicality of MRLs replacing MRs.
