Powder mixing has been the subject of research for a number of years due to its importance in a variety of industrial sectors including Pharmaceuticals, food and consumer goods manufacturing. Although a number of different models have been proposed in the literature, most of them are either empirical or require computationally intensive calculations that make them difficult to implement for realistic systems. The aim of this paper is to investigate the characteristics of powder mixing utilizing a simplified framework based on compartment modeling that efficiently and accurately capture the system behavior. A V-blender is used as a case study in order to illustrate the applicability of the proposed approach in characterizing mixing, whereas a continuous mixer is modeled in order to investigate the effect of different control strategies.
