Development of novel continuous apparatus for recovery of valuables resources from biomass

Biomass is a useful resource that can reduce CO{sub}2 in the atmosphere. Sub-critical and supercritical water (T{sub}c=374°C, P{sub}c=22.1MPa) is the reaction solvent that can convert the biomass to valuable resources in the presence of non-catalytic conditions. In the latest research, the flow reactor that it mixes raw materials with preheating water and starts the reaction is the main stream. It has been found that this type reactor is able to recover valuable materials by changing the operating conditions such as temperature, pressure and residence time. In this research, the experiment carried out using the novel reactor that the feed solution was heated directly without feeding preheated water. When D-fructose used as a common material of biomass, some materials such as 5-HMF, glyceraldehyde, dihydroxyacetone and organic acids were obtained on the high yield. At 300°C and 30MPa, the conversion of ingredient increased with the residence time, and the yield of 5-HMF also increased, especially, it became 22% when the residence time was about 6 s. The yields of formic acid, lactic acid and glycolic acid also increased with increasing the residence time.
