摘要

The elderly population is more likely tohave compromised circadian systems than younger populations. We may be able to improve senior health and well-being by increasing light exposure during the day and reducing light exposure at night. This introduces a set of problems since the elderly may not be mobile and may be living in buildings with little access to the outdoors. Options for improving access to daylight and comfortable outdoor environments are presented, as well as architectural and electric lighting changes that could improve light exposure indoors. This includes suggestions for reducing light exposure for the individual at night without affecting safety or comfort. A simple "Prescription for Healthy Light Exposure" gives elderly individuals, families, designers, medical staff and caregivers understandable guidelines.
