The demographics in the global petroleum engineering community cause widespread concern in the E&P industry.A'big crew change' is predicted, describing the imminent retirement of the babyboom generation within now and, say, ten years. This is expected to result in a massive loss of experience, creating a gap at the top of the know-how pyramid and causing a shock wave through the E&P hierarchy. Relatively inexperienced E&P professionals will have to assume the jobs of their current mentors, who on average took much longer to achieve the skills required for a given level of responsibility. Oil companies are bracing themselves to cope with this new reality by documenting best practices, formalizing detailed workflows, and increasing the efficiency of their training programs.
