Vibration is a key machinery parameter that experts use to perform diagnosis and prognosis for a wide variety of potential mechanical or fluid dynamic problems. Excessive vibration in and of itself can cause problems involving rubbing wear, brinnelled bearings, and chipped or cracked mechanical seals. The interpretation of specific vibration readings to determine if they are damaging, or if damage has already occurred, has been performed for many decades, but is (surprisingly) still a developing science. This paper will explain the scientific basis for the relationship of vibration to tribological problems, illustrated by an example calculation. It will provide insight concerning telltale signs in vibration signals and how to interpret them quantitatively.
