Setting Sail for New Horizons - Operational Challenges for Waterbourne Transport Services - Waterborne transport operations in Bermuda

Bermuda is a small Island located in the mid-Atlantic. Only 54 sq km in size, with a population of 64,000, it is also one of the most densely populated islands in the world. It is also a major tourist destination. In 2001 the Government completed planning for upgarding the ageing and under-utilised ferry system with a modern high-speed catamaran system. This paper outlines the planning, development, operations and lessons learned in the development of waterborne transport in Bermuda, a system that will soon include 6 high-speed catamaran ferry boats. In particular, the paper focuses how Bermuda intergates waterborne transport with other urban planning and development policies.
