Efficiency of Mannitol Treatment in an Experimental Rabbit Sepsis Model

Sepsis and septic shock requires emergent and aggressive therapy because of its high morbidity, mortality and complications (1). D-Man-nitol (C_6H_(14)O_6) which is a glycolisated alcohol with six carbons, is a nontoxic non-enzymatic free radical blocker for human body (2). Our aim was to define the effects of mannitol on free oxygen radicals in an experimental sepsis model and to observe its effects on multiple organ dsyfunction syndrome (manifested by renal failure, respiratory failure often with adult respiratory distress syndrome, and hepatic failure) which is the consequence of sepsis (3-8). The reason why we used rabbit in our study was, when we looked at the previous literature, mannitol blockage with rabbit usage was not frequent in experimental sepsis models. As the parameters to be looked for were many in our study and as we needed a lot of blood to be able to do this, we would need rabbit to extract this abundant blood so only rabbit could be used.
