In life-threatening digestive injuries, emergency esophagectomy, total esophago-gastrectomy or esophageal exclusion are recommended to prevent mediastinitis and SIRS. At the time of reconstruction, the choice of the esophageal substitute has to be made between the stomach, the colon or the jejunum. The aim of this report is to evaluate the results of 20 esophageal reconstructions in our Department of General Surgery of a tertiary University Hospital on Gran Canaria, analyzing epidemiological data, the surgical technique used in the emergency and reconstruction procedure, morbidity and mortality rates. 14 coloplasties and 6 gastroplasties were performed through the retrosternal route. Postoperative complications were mainly respiratory followed by 35% of fistulas and 25% of stenosis of the cervical anastomosis. We had no cases of gastroplasty o coloplasty necrosis.
