BEHAVIOUR OF A MEGANOURISHMENT ON A HIGH ENERGY COASTLINE

Nourishment of tens of millions of cubic metres of sand on a coast experiencing persistent high waves caused shoreline changes that are not anticipated with a conventional shoreline model. The shoreline behaviour is found to be mispredicted due to changes in the model effective depth of transport associated with redistribution of sand in the offshore direction. In addition, changes in longshore transport associated with a severe increase in the nearshore bed slope are not accounted for. Modifications are made to improve validation against measured shorelines and to facilitate shoreline predictions resulting from a major planned meganourishment.
