This paper presents the approach taken to utilise real world ship and metocean data to undertake retrospective analyses of ship operations both with and without the addition of Energy Saving Technologies (EST). These studies incorporate the following techniques: Power and propulsion modelling to mimic the behaviour of the propulsion system, and to derive engine performance characteristics; The alignment of Automatic Identification System (AIS) data with metocean weather data sets and recorded vessel data, to build the best possible model definition of a vessel for the seagoing conditions experienced on a voyage; The use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in order to derive the performance characteristics of ESTs from first principles; The use of statistical methods such as Monte Carlo analysis to refine the modelling techniques in order to accommodate the inevitable unknowns for each ship in the study. These technical studies provide the foundation necessary to support a wider techno-economic assessment that allow the feasibility and economic viability of such an installation to be understood.
