Kumquat is a member of the Rutaceae family and was included in the genus Citrus until about 1915 when Dr. Walter T. Swingle place it in the genus Fortunella. Kumquat is believed to be native to China and was introduced to Europe in 1846 by Robert Fortune and to Greece and specifically Corfu by a British traveller Merlin in 1924. There are four varieties of Kumquat: Fortunella hindsii, Fortunella crassifolia, Fortunella japonica and Fortunella margarita, which differ in the shape of the fruit and the height of the plant.
