Behavior of nicotine in the environmental tobacco smoke (ETS)

Behaviors of nicotine in the model secondhand tobacco smoke (SHS) and the model third hand smoke (THS) were investigated. A semi-active sampler was developed and applied to the personal exposure measurement of SHS by capturing nicotine. The amount nicotine exposed to the subjects was found to increase with increasing the number of tobacco smokes, either active or passive smoking. The amount of nicotine exposure to smokers were three or four times larger than that to passive smokers for a given number of smoked tobacco. A passive flux sampling method was applied to evaluate the emission of nicotine from the walls of smoking room, THS, and the rate of nicotine was in the range of 25-48 μg/m~2/h.
