Free Testosterone in Serum and Saliva for Assessment of Androgen Status

The level of Free Salivary Testosterone (FT) measured in serum after ultrafiltration (UF) and in saliva measured by Luminiscent Immuno Assais (LIA) can be used as additional sensitive and informative biomarker for assessment of androgen status in men and women.The Council of The Endocrine Society appointed a task force to review the situation, which exists in the measurement of testosterone (T) in biological fluids. W.Rosner and coworkers [1] make following position statement: "For scientific, analytical purposes, T assays need to be as accurate and reproducible as possible and as sensitive as necessary for the job at hand. We must be able to compare studies from multiple laboratories using different methods. Clinically used assays must be held to the same high standard. The diagnosis and management of the hyperandrogenic women, or the hypoandrogenic woman or man, will depend to a large degree on highly accurate androgen measurements."
