The Basis of the Measurement Systems Engineering Program at Arizona State University

A brief description of the philosophy of the Unified Approach to "the Engineering of Measuring Systems, as developed at Arizona State University, is given. It is shown that deviation-amplifying structures are common in measuring systems, and that a study both of system design principles and the individuality of every real transducer leads to an understanding of, and therefore control over, many apparently irrational and unpredictable responses of measuring systems. The many obvious parallels between behavior patterns in measuring systems and social systems are more than coincidental. Lessons which social scientists and engineers can learn from each other are emphasized.
