The mechanical characterization and the analytical procedures described in the paper are aimed at the structural design for the roof of a train vehicle. Sandwich structure was considered, made of glass fabric in phenolic resin with polymeric foam or Nomex honeycomb core. Static tests were run on the face sheet material and on the sandwich panels. Failure mode maps are created for the sandwich specimens to compare the analytical failure prediction and experimental behavior. The analytical and experimental results are also compared with a numerical analysis.
