摘要

The research undertaken evaluates the influence of laser texturing in the form of microscopic dimples on the surface of Poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK), with the aim of improving friction and wear characteristics whilst operating within boundary/mixed lubrication regimes. Results show that both friction and wear dramatically decrease with the introduction of surface textures, in particular by reducing the friction by up to 38% when compared with unprocessed surfaces. The factors that affect the tribological property and wear of textured PEEK surfaces are discussed together with the lubrication mechanism that enhances the hydrodynamic effects on such surfaces. Conclusions are made and further research required to understand better the mechanisms leading to the obtained significant friction and wear reductions is outlined.
