The fibrillation behaviour of cellulosic fibres in various solvents were investigated. Fibrillation tests were conducted on six kinds of cellulosic fibres (three Lyocell types, three viscose types) in distilled water, ethanol and sodium hydroxide. The fibrillation tendency of these cellulosic fibres in these solutions at various conditions were observed under a microscope. The solvent retention values of cellulosic fibres were checked according to DIN 53814 method. The effects of parameter such as pH value and temperature on fibrillation tendency of cellulosic fibres were also investigated. The relationship between solvent retention values and fibrillation tendency of cellulosic fibres is discussed. From these retention values a new assessment method for fibrillation was established. It is seen that for Lyocell, when the water retention value in 70/30 EtOH/H_2O (volume ratio) is about 40%~45%, it begins to fibrillate. The results show that with increasing temperature and pH the fibrillation tendency in all cellulosic fibres increased. Lyocell type cellulose fibres are more easily fibrillated than the other fibres.
