Manufacturers of pressure vessels and chemical apparatus try to reduce their production costs. This goal can be achieved by use of mechanized welding technology and specialized filler metal / gas combinations. Such special shielding gases contain components that enable improvements in travel speed, penetration profile and arc stability, but these components may also have an influence on the weld's corrosion behaviour. This paper describes the use of multi-component shielding gases for GMAW and their impact on certain aspects of the corrosion behaviour of various materials, such as alloy 59, alloy 50 and alloy 22. Possible shielding gas effects on the alloy composition have been examined as well as the overall corrosion behaviour of the weld deposit.
