Uranium and its alloys are pretreated in three stages: solvent degreasing; anodic degreasing at 5 A/dm2 in alkali/cyanide/EDTA soln; and anodic etch at 5 A/dm2 in aq. soln. contg. an alcohol and an acid. These pretreatment formulations exclude halide ions. The treated surface is suitable for electroplating with Ni, pref. from a sulphamate soln, Cd, Zn, or Sn/Ni alloy. Treatment is a corrosion protection for uranium radiation shields in nuclear and aero applications.
