The purpose of this paper is to provide perspective about the progress that has been made in equine anesthesia to date and to partially address current problems. Two other authors have previously addressed this issue, Hall in 1983 and Weaver in 1988 from the European perspective. The author's perspective is that of a 1977 graduate of an American college with 25 yr of experience anesthetizing horses.
