THE TEAMING TOOLSET: An Effective Merging of Government and Commercial Project Team Practices

Military, government, and commercial project teams can use the same project management tools with comparable success. A recently completed study evaluated the effectiveness of the teaming toolset, a comprehensive package of project task and process management tools, with a "procedurally just" reward system. This toolset resulted from merging project task management tools, developed in the defense industry and standardized by the Project Management Institute, with project process management tools, developed through academic and commercial research on team development activities and performance. The process management performance assessment tool, originally used in the health care industry, was validated for multidiscipline application as part of this research study of project teams efficacy. Results supported the position that use of the teaming toolset significantly impacted the perceptions of goals clarity, internal team feedback, and team conflict awareness. No significant performance difference was found for participants with defense industry or military backgrounds.
