This paper gives an overview of the Consortium of faculty from four Universities involved in basic scientific research to quantify the cycling of contaminants in the Connecticut River Airshed and Watershed. Research by the authors at the University of Connecticut within the Consortium, consists primarily of modeling the airshed processes and studying the air-surface bi-directional exchanges of mercury and nitrogen in the basin. The USEPA Models3 system has been compiled and used for the airshed modeling work. The UConn group has developed a model for natural surface emissions of mercury and is conducting an extensive field campaign to measure and further model the surface exchanges of mercury.
