Flight of an airplane on another planet brings with it a new perspective beyond what is traditionally considered in airplane design. An integrated assessment and comparative analysis using linear-covariance techniques has been used to assess Mars airplane navigation and guidance capabilities. Use of a robust guidance and navigation strategy, founded in heritage sensors and Kalman filtering techniques, is shown to meet science mission needs. Future trends of science missions and their impact on the guidance and navigation needs of aerial vehicles on other planets is described.
