In order to encourage the spread of distributed energy systems, this study develops an autonomous diagnosis of the distributed energy systems using fieldbus devices. Firstly, the authors construct an experimental apparatus of a heat exchanging process and a measurement and control system with fieldbus devices. Through experiments on the process characteristics, an autonomous diagnosis algorithm is developed and its effectiveness is demonstrated. This algorithm is based on monitoring the overall heat transfer coefficient to detect the deterioration in thermal performance due to air accumulation in the shell of the heat exchanger.
