Fabrication and Characterization of Apatite Sintered Bodies with c-Axis Orientation

Hydroxyapatite (HAp) crystals were synthesized by the hydrolysis of CaHPOEkO in a NaOH solution. Their aggregates formed by hydrolysis at 100癈 were composed of needle-like crystals which aligned in c-axis orientation perpendicular to the wide surface of the plate-like HAp aggregate. On the other hand, the aggregates formed by hydrolysis at 25癈 were composed of small crystals with random orientation. HAp sintered bodies were fabricated using these aggregates, hi the HAp sintered body, the plate-like HAp aggregates formed at 100癈 accumulated horizontally to the flat surface of the cylindrical sintered body and the c-axis orientation of the HAp aggregates was maintained even after sintering. On the contrary, the HAp sintered body fabricated from the aggregates formed at 25癈 had no obvious crystal orientation.
