'Reaching from the Inside Out' - The Use of Drama for Providing HIV and TB Information and Education at the Immigration Detention Centre, Bangkok

Undocumented migrants who are discovered working in Thailand may be detained at the Immigration Detention Centre (IDC) in Bangkok. Airborne transmission of TB is of concern in a closed and crowded setting, requiring health promotion that can also include HIV/AIDS prevention. Imprisonment can build feelings of suspicion, paranoia, and distrust in individuals and within particular relationships, cell groups, or towards 'outsiders' who enter into it. These feelings can be further inflamed when controversial subjects such as HIV/AIDS are introduced. Trust and relationships must be built in a group situation so that health issues such as TB and HIV can be openly discussed.
