Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Long Distance Drivers Towards HIV/AIDS

Introduction: The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice of HIV/AIDS among long distance drivers. Methods: A cross- sectional study was carried out among 350 long distance drivers on transit through Benin -City, Edo -State, Nigeria. Result: Only 18.9(percent) of the respondents had correct knowledge of means of transmission of HIV/AIDS and only 5.1(percent) knew that a virus causes HIV/AIDS. One hundred and twenty-three (35.1(percent)) will commit suicide if confirmed to be HIV positive. Only 26.6(percent) of the respondents will educate others if confirmed positive to HIV/AIDS. Two hundred and sixty-four (75.4(percent)) would either abstain from casual sex or use condoms. Conclusions: Knowledge and attitude to HIV/AIDS was generally poor. However their protective sexual practices in terms of the use of condoms and abstinence was good as 75.4(percent) would either abstain from casual sex or use condoms. There is a dire need for public enlightenment and the need to focus on the target group is imperative.
