The inhibition of hydrogen production by lactic acid bacteria was investigated in this study.Herein, Clostridium acetobutylicum was employed as hydrogen producing bacteria andLactobacillus paracasei as lactic acid bacteria. The batch experiments for hydrogenproduction were carried out with or without L. paracasei or the supernatant of their culturebroth under pH 4.5, 5.0 or 5.5. The results showed that the inhibition of hydrogenproduction by L. paracasei was more remarkable under lower pH than under higher pH.This indicated that the maintenance of higher pH would depress the inhibition by L. paracasei.The research results of continuous experiments for hydrogen production also supported it.
