Balanced (Multimode) Relief of Pain Following Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (Spinal Surgery) Changing Trends with Advance in Technology

By August 1998 The first author has done 1000 PLIFs using his own uninstrumented technique. Epidural catheter with morphine given intermittently was routinely used as the mode of relief of pain. 270 cases were analysed.Failure rate was 17% and in 18% of the cases the relief was not satisfactory. More recently the technique has been changed to intravenous morphine with PCA pump.lt gives satisfactory relief of pain. There have been no serious complications related to the technique or the use of drugs.Hypotension was noticed in 7 cases.
