The conlrolled-potenlial electrolysis of I,l-bis(4-chlorophenyl)-2,2,2-trichloroethane (DDT) was carried out in the presence of a hydrophobic vitamin Bu, hcplamelhyl cobyrinale perchlorale. DDT was dechlorinated lo form l,l-bis(4-chlorophenyl)-2,2-dichloroclhane (DDD), l,l-bis(4-chlorophenyI)-2,2-dichlomelhylene (DDE), l-chloro-2,2-bls(4-chlorophenyl)e(hylene (DDMU) and l,l,4,4-ielrakis(4-chlorophcnyl)-2,3-dichloro-2-bulene (TTDB) (E/Z), and quantitative recovery of the catalyst after the electrolysis was confirmed by the electronic spectroseopy. A photo-sensitive intermediate having a cobalt-carbon bond formed during the electrolysis was characterized by the electronic spectroseopy. The mechanism for the formation of various dehalogenatcd products was investigated by various speclro.wopic methods.
