The main direction of development of pipe steels and large diameter pipe production in Russia

THE ECONOMICS OF the advanced industrial countries depends on the state of pipeline transport, since natural gas and oil are principal energy resources until now. OOO Gazprom is the largest gas producer in Russia. This company is also the principal consumer of pipes for construction of gas pipelines and determines the requirements to pipes for gas pipelines. The strategy of Gazprom is to increase gas production up to 560-580 billion m3 per year till the year of 2010 and to provide 150 thousand km of the general gas pipeline length. The principal tendency is an increase in the length of the gas-main pipelines, working pressure increase and operating temperature reduction. Lengthy sections of gas pipelines pass through the environmental zones of strong corrosive activity. While constructing the sea deep-water gas pipelines the reliable operation of the pipeline shall be provided for a design-operating period (30 years) because of impossibility of repair works at great depths. Production of new classes of steels and new dimensions of heavy-wall pipes is necessary to realize such projects. Fundamental reconstruction of their production process and development of new processes will be required for production of the new types of products at the existent plants [1]. The base pipe grades, which are adopted by Gazprom for construction of main pipelines, are pipes of diameter 1420mm.
