In this paper, the Prohl transfer matrix method(PTMM) is extended to the transient analysis of nonlinear rotor bearing systems, and Prohl transfer matrix-Newmark formulation integration method' is proposed, in which, firstly the transfer matrix of state variables is gotten with the aid of the Newmark β formulation(NBF), secondly PTMM and NBF are used to solve the transient response of the system from the boundary condition. In order to improve the numerical instability of PTMM, the transfer vecter (fle){sup}T not the traditional (fle){sup}T, is used. This method contains the advantages of PTMM and NBF, is app liable to calculate the transient response of a large complex nonlinear rotor-bearing system, and to analyze its stability. This method is illustrated and tested for the transient response of an unbalanced flexible rotor incorporating squeeze-film damper, without centralizing spring. The obtained results agree well with those from the Runge-Kutta method.
