An ELISA based on fecombinant SARS-Coronavirus proteins was developed for diagnostic and seroprevalence studies. The whole nucleopro-tein N and three fragments of it (Nl, N2 and N3) were used to detect virus-specific IgG in reference sera from 20 SARS patients fulfilling the WHO definition of confirmed cases. Positive reactions with the N and all its derived fragments, were detected. In contrast, no reactivity was detected in the sera of 20 healthy and 73 subjects with low-tract respiratory diseases. The use of our recombinant antigens holds promise for a standardised SARS serology.
