A Study on the Development of Grade Judgment System for External Quality of Cantaloupe Melon by fuzzy Inference

In Japan, cantaloupe melons are sold at about seven or eight dollars, or more apiece. The prices are determined not only by the internal quality but by the external qualitj. In this study, the appearance features were extracted by image processing toexplore the possibility of a grade-judging index tor evaluated the external quality. Furthermore, the possibility of automated grade-judging systems using fuzzy inference was discussed. As a result, a significant difference in the feature extraction fromthe melon images was obtained for each feature factor, and the total judgment ratio of the grade in terms of the external quality of the melon was 83% by using fuzzy-in fere rice systems. Finally, the possibility of automated grade-judging systems for cantaloupe melon by using image processing and fuzzy-inference systems were showed.
