The Coordinating Research Council(CRC)has sponsored the CRC NARSTO-Northeast modeling study to perform a multi-model performance evaluation and sensitivity analysis study for the July 1995 NARSTO-Northeast episode.The CRC NARSTO-Northeast modeling study analyzed the ozone results from the Models-3 Community Multiscale Air Quality(CMAQ)and the Comprehensive Air Quality Model with extensions(CAMx)modeling systems.There were several objectives of this study: To apply multiple photochemical models(CMAQ and CAMx)using multiple meteorological realizations(MM5 and RAMS)minimizing the amount of interpolation or averaging of the meteorological data;To perform a comprehensive model performance evaluation of photochemical models using the robust NARSTO-Northeast ambient database;To investigate the sensitivity of photochemical model ozone and precursor predictions to a variety of model inputs,model options,and model formulations including: Meteorological Model(MM5 and RAMS); Level of Four Dimensional Data Assimilation(FDDA)used in a Meteorological Model; Effects of VOC and/or NO_X Emission Reductions on Ozone Concentrations; Effects of Uncertainties in Biogenic and Mobile Source Emissions; Effects of Fine(4-km)vs.Coarse(12-km)Grid Resolution on model Performance and Emission Controls; Effects of Alternative Advection Solvers; Effects of Different Chemical Mechanism(CB4 vs.SAPRC);and Effects of Different Photochemical Grid Models(CAMx and CMAQ).This paper presents the key findings of the CRC NARSTO-Northeast Modeling Study including model performance evaluation and intercomparison,sensitivity analysis and key findings.
