FELINE DERMATOPATHIES: NEWLY DESCRIBED DISORDERS

Mosquito Bite Hypersensitivity: Initially described as a variant of the eosinophilic granuloma, this disorder is now understood to be a hypersensitivity (immediate and late phase reaction) to mosquito salivary antigens. The most typical presentation is multiple papules on the haired portion of the muzzle, but some cats may also have lesions on the convex surface of the ears, preauricular area, carpi, and junction of the haired skin and footpad. The disease is seasonal and reflective of the mosquito season in each geographic area. Once affected, cats generally will develop lesions repeatedly. Diagnosis is suspected on clinical findings but needs to be confirmed by histopathology of biopsy specimens. Histopathological findings are an eosinophilic folliculitis and furunculosis. Corticosteroid therapy is beneficial and, if possible, minimization of mosquito exposure is indicated. Hyposensitization therapy has also been reported to be effective.
