Multi-mode fibers of various modal bandwidths were investigated for their transmission characteristics in a Gigabit Ethernet application. When their overfilled launched (OFL) modal bandwidths at 850 nm are greater than 575 MHz-km, these multi-mode fibers can transmit 1000BASE-SX frames to approximately 1 km without any communication errors. In the case of 1000BASE-LX, the multi-mode fiber OFL modal bandwidth 565 MHz-km at 1300 nm showed transmission errors at the distance of 1 km, and, for single-mode fiber, the laser launch power coupled into the single-mode fiber is the important parameter in determining the effective transmission distance.
