Many structures and machines are made up from components (beams, and plates) which are joined together by welding, bolts, rivets or by using gaskets. The mechanical behavior of such built-up systems is greatly affected by the properties of their joints which are usually complaint and dissipative. In this thesis, to apply PFA to more complicated practical structures, the wave approach is applied to the case of the attenuation of the incident waves under the influence of a joint with compliance for one- and two-dimensional structural elements of semi-infinite extend connected by welding, bolts, rivets, or using gaskets. The aim of this study is to give greater insight into the problem of non-conservative coupling, which has not been extensively discussed in the literature. Interest is focused on the effect of impedance in the joints on the magnitudes of energy flows between, and energy levels in each component. Numerical examples that illustrate these various ideas are presented.
